Social Impact and IEEE Events

Social impact projects are intentional initiatives designed to create positive, measurable change in the communities hosting IEEE events. These projects extend their influence beyond the event itself, leaving lasting benefits for the local individuals and communities involved.

Driving Change Through Social Impact for Events

  • Supporting and uplifting local communities
  • Building meaningful, lasting relationships
  • Empowering IEEE events to be a catalyst for change
  • Creating a legacy of long-term impact

IEEE aims to integrate social impact into its events to support its mission of advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. These initiatives help connect events with local communities, inspire innovation, and expand collaboration and engagement of participants. By creating meaningful experiences that cultivate purpose, strengthen community ties and support the development of the next generation of engineers, IEEE events become more than just technical gatherings.

Research from the Events Industry Council shows business events contribute $1.6 trillion to global GDP, support 27.5 million jobs, and engage 1.6 billion participants. Beyond economic impact, events also positively influence attendees and communities.

Ways to Implement in Your Event

Three pathways within the social impact continuum, with projects that can be scaled and tailored to align with available resources and meet specific community needs. Different projects serve different goals:

Community Service

These are “giving back” projects that typically require minimal planning and resources. Examples include organizing a donation drive for local schools or partnering with a local organization for a park clean-up.

Community Engagement

These projects involve a deeper level of commitment and collaboration with the community. Unlike community service, community engagement projects are designed to address specific local needs, such as hosting a career fair or organizing a STEM education workshop.

Legacy Project

These are more long-term projects that create lasting impact. They support IEEE’s mission and meet important community needs, often developing over several years in partnership with the local community.

Collaborating with Local Partners

When working with local communities and organizations on a social impact project, it’s important to partner with groups that are deeply rooted in the community and have earned trust and credibility. Allow these partners to lead discussions about the communities needs, as they are best to identify opportunities for meaningful impact. Strive to build a partnership that is mutually beneficial and that can grow to be a long-term partnership.

2025 From Idea to Launch: Supporting Scotland’s Tech Innovators

The Glasgow community event hosted by CEE brought together Scotland’s emerging tech talent and experienced local industry professionals to share practical guidance on launching and growing ventures. The free event featured a panel and networking session where participants explored topics such as intellectual property, funding, confidence-building, and accessing support. Speakers shared personal experiences that highlighted the importance of mentorship, hands-on learning, and self-advocacy. Attendees also gained insight into Scotland’s startup ecosystem, which is recognized for strong public-sector support, accessible funding, and a collaborative culture of innovation. The event demonstrated IEEE’s commitment to supporting local communities and inspiring the next generation of tech innovators.

One-IEEE Jamaica Workshop 2024

The workshop demonstrates how conferences can drive social impact by engaging students, professionals, and community leaders to support local tech talent. Through cross-collaboration, youth involvement, and IEEE program resources, it serves as a model for integrating a mission driven engagement into events and making a meaningful impact in the local community for future generations.

MOVE Moment Microgiving at IEEE Convene 2023

The CEE team launched a micro-giving initiative to align an event with IEEE’s mission through built-in social impact. By integrating giving opportunities into registration and live engagement, the program offered a simple, scalable way to unite participants around a meaningful cause, enhancing purpose, participation and community connection.
