Carbon Offset Resource
What are Carbon Offsets?
Carbon offsets compensate for carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions through funding projects that reduce or remove equivalent emissions elsewhere, thereby contributing to climate change mitigation and supporting ongoing sustainability efforts. Additionally, offsetting provides the benefit of holding your event accountable, especially in situations where emissions cannot be avoided or reduction options are limited. It is important to note that offsetting should supplement ongoing sustainable efforts rather than be the only solution for reducing your event’s environmental impact.

How to Offset Your Events’ Carbon Footprint
-
-
- Attendee: Offer participants the option to compensate for their carbon emissions during the registration process. The event organizer will make payment to the chosen offset project at the end of the event.
- Event: The event itself would budget a set amount (say, $5–10 per attendee) and apply it to the offset project selected at the conclusion of the event to cover the cost of the overall carbon footprint.
- Sponsorship: Present this as a sponsorship opportunity, with a partnering organization able to assume the role of “environmental sponsor” and receive recognition throughout the event.
