Dr. Tyler J. Grassman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at The Ohio State University, with a joint appointment in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. He received his B.A. degree in Chemistry from the University of Oregon, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of California, San Diego in La Jolla, CA. After holding postdoctoral and staff research positions in Electrical & Computer Engineering and the Institute for Materials Research at OSU, he joined the faculty ranks (in MSE and ECE at OSU) in 2015.
Dr. Grassman’s research interests and expertise lie in the development and characterization of novel functional materials and materials integration for electronic and photonic applications. Of particular focus is the area of advanced photovoltaics, as well as clean energy and energy efficiency technologies, in general. His work encompasses a wide range of research activities, including (but not necessarily limited to): functional materials epitaxy and growth science; heteroepitaxy and dissimilar / metamorphic materials integration; electron microscopy based materials characterization and analysis methods; microstructure and defect characterization and engineering; and surface and interface science.
Dr. Grassman has served on the Organizing and Technical Program Committees, in various roles, for the IEEE Photovoltaics Specialists Conference (PVSC) since 2014, including as Technical Program Chair in 2021 and upcoming General Chair in 2025 for PVSC53 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
